Bachelor 2018, Larissa Hoff

The Blazing World

Supervisors: Kerstin Rupp, Wim Westerveld

The Blazing World is a work of utopian literature penned in 1666 by the British aristocrat Margaret Cavendish. It is the first known utopian narrative written by a woman and published under her own name. Larissa Hoff took an illustrator’s approach to this book, developing her own visual language as well as a book concept that includes her drawings as well as the original English text. However, instead of perfectly mirroring the story’s plot, Hoff’s drawings present a vision of the future utopian society that Cavendish described.
