Bachelor 2017, Jill Senft

Die geschälte Banale

Absurd short stories. Acrylic on cardboard and paper.

Supervisors: Wim Westerveld, Kathi Käppel

Jill Senft describes her BA project as follows: “Why simply reproduce reality in the form in which it already exists? Illustration lets me recreate it imaginatively. This project combines what I see and experience with the things that my imagination invents. The stories here go beyond everyday experiences because they’re too absurd to actually occur – but they’re loosely inspired by my actual life. As I go about my everyday, doing things like eating, gazing at my neighbors through the window, watching Hitchcock movies, or going for a walk, the gears in my head start turning. My curiosity keeps propelling me forward. I’m particularly interested in playing with perception by varying proportions from tiny to huge, incorporating physically impossible perspectives, and citing well-known icons and design symbols. I like to get started by working in a sketchbook with acrylic paints. Using a sketchbook gives you a great deal of freedom, and feels less restrictive than working on a loose sheet of paper does. At a later stage, I revise my designs on paper or cardboard. Generally speaking, I like to keep things colorful, strange, and humorous.”
