For this project, the students developed design concepts for a book about lectures delivered as part of the “ver_she_denes” series at the weißensee academy of art berlin. These lectures concerned the empowerment and advancement of women in the sciences. The basic idea underlying this project was to examine the relationship between theory and design. The students looked at typefaces from both discursive and iconic perspectives, at the levels of language and image, respectively. For instance, typography can be specially selected to either bolster a linguistically strong argument, or to quietly serve the sole purpose of aiding legibility without drawing any visual attention to its presence. As part of this semester project, the students organized talks and workshops related to textual construction, editorial design, book design, and book typography. In keeping with the classic task of book designers, the aim here was to critically review the existing textual material and develop editorially and dramaturgically interesting concepts for a corresponding book.
