Fünfzig Jahre Volk & Wissen Verlag

Client: Volk und Wissen Verlag, Berlin, DE

Project: Commemorative anniversary book

Year: 1995

The Volk und Wissen Verlag is a German publishing house that published nearly all textbooks used at schools in the GDR until the German reunification. Two years after the fall of the Berlin wall, it was taken over by the Cornelsen publishing house. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of VWV, a book was published containing the “Fibeln” published by VWV since its founding. “Fibeln” are German alphabet books primarily designed for young children, and are prominently displayed in the commemorative book. These images are accompanied by brief explanations about the alphabet books’ underlying methodology and the psychological/didactic tactics they employ. The book was printed with a special dry ink (Nova concept) on matte paper so that the reproductions of the originals would appear as “realistic” as possible.
