Die Sammlung Paul Maenz

Internationale Avantgarde seit 1960

Client: Neues Museum Weimar, Stiftung Weimarer Klassik, DE

Project: Catalog

Year: 1999

The influential gallerist Paul Maenz decided to give much of his collection to the city of Weimar for display in the Neues Museum. This catalog was published in conjunction with the reopening of the museum in 1999. The Maenz Collection is an anthology of contemporary art, spanning genres from minimal to avant-garde. This volume includes the works of Anselmo, Armleder, Fetting, Fleury, Haring, Kiefer, Manzoni, Paolini, and Taaffe. To assemble this catalog, we worked with many layers of text (titles, introductions, essays, object descriptions, comments), which made it a real challenge to control the tension between the texts, images, and blank spaces. The images had to be given room so that they could “breathe” within the large quantity of contextual material. We used the typefaces Corporate S and Monotype Joanna, combining a relatively slim and formal sans serif for headlines with a high-contrast, tight classic antiqua for body texts.
